A clear or a blur vision?

Responding to the video clip Changing Education Paradigms about a degree certificate could not guarantee a student to get a job in the future, it is quite true that we could see the rise of the unemployment rates globally and most of them are with high educational qualification.

Why does this happen? Is the supply exceeded demand? What has gone wrong? Who is to be blame?

Well, as to my opinion, the education system now is about standardising and conforming students just like production of batches of students. The curriculums are fixed and were made before the course was started. It was made with the conception of students should know about those subjects and they should be able to perform after they have graduated. The schools assume that students were fed with all the necessary knowledge through the curriculums. However, were the needs of the students being taken into consideration? How often has the curriculums been changed when there is a need? How long will it take for the school to realise the needs of the students? In most countries, there is government intervention in school curriculums which creates further limitations. What if there are geniuses who could do beyond the curriculums being taught? Were they given the appropriate guidance and assistance needed to further enhance their skills in order to contribute to the country in the future? As to what I have known, geniuses will find class boring and is a waste of time for them to study in school. If there isn’t any proper guidance or assistance is given to them, they will end up doing something normal or adverse. Therefore, they are all the same after they graduate. How many of students graduate in a year? I believe that only a small group of them will get to secure a job.

Teachers also play a very important role in students’ future. How optimistic are teachers today? How much commitment do they commit? How much do they really care for the students? How much available time a teacher has besides teaching and doing all the documentation works? How many of them teach because of passion and wanted to help others to success? How many of them are enjoying their work? How many teachers have helped students to realise their talents? How many teachers have never distinguished any student? How many teachers really understand their students? How many teachers are giving private tuition after school? A teacher’s role is not only teaching but it also involves educating and realising the student’s talent. Many students are expected to do the same and have the same results. In real life, this is just impossible. Many teachers only focus on the smart and better students in class. I wonder how the weaker or slower students are going to cope. Students attend school without knowing the reason why they must attend classes and the importance of learning in school. They are not aware how this knowledge could relate to their life in the future. That’s the reason why, it was so true that kids do not believe that going to school will secure them a great job.

Therefore, teachers should use learners centered teaching to teach in class instead of the traditional style of teaching. Teachers should not dominate the class just to themselves. The participations of students are the most vital prospect. It is through self-experiencing and questioning where a student will really believe and remember. Students love having fun. If the class is just dominated by the teacher and remember the period of a student can focus is really short, how many of them will end up understand what have been thought after a whole day of classes?

Most parents will want their children to be engineers, doctors or lawyers. Students were given an aim of what they are supposed to be in their future since young. It is not through their interest and talent. Do you think all of them will perform to the peak? I don’t think so!

Therefore, we should start changing the curriculums, the ways teachers are teaching and parents should assist their children in achieving their goals with their own freedom in order to get qualitative graduates which will secure a job in the future.

  1. Based on your interpretation, are schools still relevant? Do we still need schools since what the schools can offer students are mostly irrelevant to their experience?

What do you think? Any comment?

  2. Eventually, in this modern society, school is also important because most of the parents are both working adults and they will need a place to put their children at least to learn something and to pass their exam for the certificate which is required just to get a job in the society. This job may not require any knowledge or skill. It may be a low waged job.

Secondly, students will need to learn about socialising too. It is through socialising, they are learning more than what being or not being taught in school.

Thirdly, students will need to attend school because they will still need time to grow and be able to think. They will have to learn about morals, responsibilities, sports, arts and musics. This is just the preparation for them to so called achieve their dreams in the future. If they are too early in the society, this will cause tonnes of adverse effects.

Finally, students learn about self responsible in school. They are to do things by themselves, in pairs or in a group. This is the time they can't always rely on their parents. They must also learn to grow.

It is so sad to say that schools are not helping others to recognise their talents and to help them along to achieve their dreams. That was why I said that, there should be changes in the curriculums, teachers' styles of teaching and parents' mind set. We still need school. Thus, with a change, there will be hope for students. Students will find the lessons relevant to real life and will have more interest to study.

  3. Eagle, like your justification. However, why aren't many people want to be a teacher? Even in the pay scheme, teacher's salary is ranked one of the lowest in the job market.

  4. It is not easy to be a teacher. A teacher must be a role model to others. Some people would just want to be themselves. Being a role model is a little too much for them to take.

A teacher must have passion to teach. It is not just a clocking in and out job. A teacher must always have his/her students in mind. He/she must always update herself in teaching skills, knowledge and improve his/her moral skills. This is not an easy task because most people would like to enjoy and relax after work. It's like a 'no more office work at home'.

A teacher must have the patience and wisdom when it comes to dealing with students, parents and school. I think an accountant is less stressful than a teacher. An accountant will only need to find out the mistake or problem when the accounts is not tally and fixed it. An accountant will only be answerable to only his/her superior, in the other hand, a teacher will need to answer to hundreds of people like parents and the school.

A teacher must also be fair to every students no matter they are better or weaker. This is extremely hard to control due to human's nature.

Being a teacher is quite challenging because you won't know what you will face everyday with students. A teacher must also has the wisdom on how to guide the students when there is a problem.

So, anyhow, a teacher with passion to teach will not feel that their pay is not so good if they had agreed to teach. Without the passion to teach, everyday's life will be like living in hell.:)

  5. That's why I think there isn't much people who want to be a teacher with so much of stress, work and a low pay.
